Fireside Chat with Ian Tenenbaum: ADHD Sales Mastery
Most sellers I coach struggle with focus.
They get distracted easily, waste time on “busy work” and often feel like they got nothing done at the end of the day.
Many believe they have ADHD, and when I asked a roomful of 90 sellers how many have trouble focusing, nearly every hand went up.
If this resonates, you are not alone!
Regardless of whether you are diagnosed with ADHD or not, focusing is harder than ever. In the past 10 years, we’ve become addicted to our smartphones, which provide immediate hits of dopamine every time we pick them up.
There are more distractions than ever before, both at work and in our personal lives. Anything your heart desires is literally a click away, including entertainment, shopping, sports, dating apps, podcasts, texting friends or family, or scrolling social media.
All of this dopamine has rewired our brain so that more neural activity occurs in the “pleasure center” of our brain, rather than the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive functions like planning, decision making, strategy, and emotional regulation.
Making it MUCH HARDER to focus on the deep work needed to find, execute, and close large deals in tech. And leading us to get distracted during the day and gravitate towards “busywork” instead of RGA’s (revenue generating activities) that create, advance, and close pipeline.
So if you struggle to focus, I’m here to tell you that IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT!
Your brain is wired to take the path of least resistance.
Here’s the great news in all this: if you want to change, you can!
It’s simple, but not easy.
You need to re-wire your brain so that doing hard things no longer feels so hard.
The more often you use your prefrontal cortex, the less difficult deep work will feel.
One other important point to make: the hardest part is always getting started.
Whether you have ADHD or not, we all could use better tools to help us focus at work and begin to rewire our brain.
Because if we don’t we will suffer from the guilt and anxiety which comes from feeling like we wasted the day, making us less present and joyful when we aren’t working.
I recently sat down with Ian Tenenbaum, a former client of mine who suffered with severe ADHD that had been impacting his performance at work when we started.
He worked with me on sales strategy, and partnered with a world-renowned ADHD coach, to learn how to focus at work and harness his ADHD as a superpower.
The results: he quickly became a top Enterprise Seller and now runs his own 6 figure coaching business helping ADHD sellers and Entrepreneurs.
In this conversation, we covered the following topics:
- What are some of the signs that you may be struggling with ADHD?
- Why sellers with ADHD have a much harder time with certain sales activities
- Simple tools and strategies to help ADHD sellers rewire their brain to focus better
We also partnered together to launch the first ever sales training course specifically built to help sellers with ADHD. It’s called ADHD sales mastery, and you can access it here at the early adopter pricing of $197, reduced from $997 this month only (it’s free for existing Untap Your Sales Potential clients).
