Tech Sales Coaching: How Top Enterprise Sellers Consistently Hit Their Sales Targets
The biggest lie in tech sales is that more activity equals more success.
After coaching more than 1,000 tech sellers, I have seen the same pattern repeatedly. The reps struggling most often say, “I’m working my hardest, but I’m not getting results.”
Then we look at their calendars.
Most of their time is spent on internal calls, emails, Slack messages, CRM cleanup, busy work, and high-volume prospecting that produces very little pipeline.
It feels like hard work. But it is not revenue-generating work.
Top enterprise sellers think differently. Instead of asking, “How can I work harder?” they ask,
“What should I be working on that will lead to results?”
This is where tech sales coaching becomes so valuable. Great coaching helps sellers identify the habits, skills, and activities that consistently create revenue, while eliminating the distractions that keep them busy without moving deals forward.
Focus on revenue-generating activities
The best sellers structure their calendars around revenue-generating activities (RGAs).
These include executive conversations, strategic prospecting, meaningful discovery, deal strategy, multithreading, champion enablement, and activities that directly create or advance pipeline.
One great conversation with a senior executive can move a deal forward faster than months of working with middle management.
Sales is not about working more hours. It is about consistently working on the few things that matter most.
Earn trust instead of pitching
Another major difference between average and elite enterprise sellers is how they approach customer conversations.
For years, I was a sales robot.
I mastered my pitch. I knew every feature. I had an answer for every objection. I presented well, stayed persistent, and closed hard.
That approach worked in transactional sales. It did not work in enterprise software.
Enterprise sales is about earning trust.
Executives do not buy because you delivered a polished presentation. They buy from sellers who deeply understand their business, their goals, and the problems standing in their way.
After missing quota three years in a row at Salesforce, I changed everything.
I stopped pitching and started having real conversations. I stopped leading with products and started leading with the customer’s priorities. I stopped trying to impress people and started showing up with curiosity.
I shifted from being an inward-focused seller to an outward-focused seller.
An inward-focused seller thinks, “My job is to sell you.”
An outward-focused seller thinks, “My job is to help you.”
That shift helped me make President’s Club four years in a row and become the number-one Enterprise AE at Salesforce.
Enter executive meetings with a point of view
Top sellers also enter executive meetings with a point of view.
They do not show up empty-handed and ask executives to explain their goals. They research the business, understand the company’s priorities, and develop a hypothesis about what may be getting in the way.
A strong point of view follows a simple structure:
Here is what you are trying to achieve.
Here is what may be preventing you from achieving it.
Here is how we can help.
Great sellers also qualify ruthlessly.
They do not chase every deal. They ask whether the problem is meaningful, whether the customer wants to solve it now, whether the right people are involved, and whether there is real engagement.
If customers are not spending time with you, that is your answer.
Orchestrate large, complex deals
Finally, elite enterprise sellers understand that large deals must be orchestrated.
They empower champions to sell internally, build relationships across the buying committee, and coordinate legal, procurement, finance, security, executives, and technical teams.
Consistent sales performance is not created by one great pitch or one lucky quarter.
It comes from doing the right activities, with the right mindset, every single day.
