Why Mastering Sales is the Gateway to Unlocking Your Dream Life
From Missing Quota to #1 at Salesforce
Let’s get real. Early in my career at Salesforce, I hit a rough patch—missing my quota three years straight. On the last day of the fiscal year, after missing quota by just $50,000, I screamed at myself in the mirror and said “NEVER AGAIN!” I never wanted to feel like a failure, and was determined to do whatever it took to learn how to be a top seller.
It was a tough pill to swallow, but instead of throwing in the towel, I used that setback as fuel to transform myself and my sales approach. That year I invested $20,000 in my own development by hiring a coach, joining a Mastermind, and going on four personal development retreats. Through relentless dedication and a mindset overhaul, I finished 350% of quota and became the #1 Strategic Account Executive in the Enterprise Select Division at Salesforce the following year.
Achieving Financial Freedom Through Tech Sales
Tech sales isn’t just about closing deals; it’s a pathway to financial independence. By mastering the craft, I reached a substantial income level that allowed me to retire from corporate sales at 41. My income went from $240,000/year my first four years at Salesforce, to $720,000/year the last four years. This financial freedom opened the door for me to pursue my passion for coaching full-time, helping others unlock their potential.
Embracing the ‘Hard Now = Easy Later’ Philosophy
The journey wasn’t a walk in the park. I adopted the mantra “Hard Now = Easy Later,” committing to the grind with the understanding that today’s efforts lead to tomorrow’s rewards. This philosophy was instrumental in creating the life I had always envisioned.
The Power of Knowing Your WHY
Understanding your “WHY” is crucial in sales. It’s the driving force that keeps you motivated through daily hardships. When you’re clear about why you do what you do, it becomes easier to navigate challenges and stay committed to your goals.
The reason I was able to continue performing at such a high level at Salesforce was because I had a strong WHY, and looked at it every single day.
Here were the key parts of my why:
1. My wife is a full time mom, we have two children.I am the sole breadwinner of my family and my why has always been to provide the dream life for my family.
2. Skill development: I wanted to master sales, because I knew that if I could become a top sales performer I would earn life changing money and develop skills that I could use in whatever came next, such as writing, presenting, leading a team, and developing mental toughness.
3. Coaching: I wanted to save enough money to become a full time coach, and knew that the only way I would have credibility to coach others would be if I was a top performer who knew exactly how to do the job at the highest level.
